In this podcast, Jean-Christophe Peret and I explore how beliefs are built upon each other as a scaffold and hold onto each other to give the illusion of coherence. At the core of this system, are three possible beliefs or disposition towards the world, which condition the rest of the scaffold. Choosing that the World is against you, that the World is indifferent to your presence or that the World is here for you has a profound impact on what else you believe, how you relate to yourself and others, the values that you have and how ultimately you make decisions and show up in life.

Over the years, I have had many rich and deep discussions on the human condition with Jean-Christophe Peret. We first started to think deeply about the world and ourselves at the coffee machine when we worked at the same company. When we both left, we went back to study at university, Jean-Christophe in Leiden and me in Utrecht where we had even more interesting discussions on the nature of things.
During our last catch-up, we decided to share with others what we normally keep to ourselves as I was reflecting on the place that our beliefs take in our lives. The podcast is available here: https://youtu.be/M5OfwiKO5Lw
As a counsellor, I work with people to help them articulate the world they live in and find meaning in it. As such, their beliefs come to shape their world. Part of our work is to help them examine their belief system and consider new perspectives and beliefs that are more coherent and meaningful to them at this stage in their life.
In the podcast, we explore how beliefs are built upon each other as a scaffold and hold onto each other to give the illusion of coherence.
At the core of this system, are three possible beliefs or disposition towards the world which condition the rest of the scaffold.

If you’re in a rush: the essence of the concept we’re discussing is introduced in the first 12 minutes, after which we explore it in more depth.
As one says…”Be careful for what you wish, as you might well get it”. After this podcast, you might think “I better think about my thinking as it creates my reality”.
Wishing you a good session in sharing our friendship between Jean-Christophe and myself.
